February, 2005
Join us in February for our 2005 White House Conference on Aging
Designated Events
As part of GSA's "Civic Engagement in an Older America"
initiative, GSA will be conducting town hall-style forums during
the month of February. We invite you to attend these free, public
forums, which will be held in the following cities. Please RSVP
to Christina Leone at cleone@agingsociety.org or call (202) 842-1275
x 128:
Thursday, February 3rd - Winter Park, Florida
Tuesday, February 15th - St. Louis, Missouri
Friday, February 25th - Phoenix, Arizona
Monday, February 28th - Boston, Massachusetts
The purpose of GSA's civic engagement project is to determine how
to promote greater civic involvement of older adults in order to
improve the quality of life in communities across America. During
the forum, distinguished panelists from the community will present
their findings and recommendations on strategies for expanding opportunities
for older adults, such as the Experience Corps and Next Chapter
Initiatives.
The forums will be conducted in the style of a legislative hearing.
Panelists have been invited to each forum and will include community
leaders, experts on civic engagement, and representatives of non-profit
organizations, government agencies, business, and academic institutions.
Dick Gephardt, former U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader,
has been confirmed as a speaker for the St. Louis forum. Dorcas
Hardy, chair of the WHCoA Policy Committee has also confirmed as
a speaker for the St. Louis forum. Additionally, WHCoA Policy Committee
members have been invited to attend each forum.
Following the panels, there will be an opportunity for public comments,
questions, and participation in a survey on the topic of civic engagement.
Information gathered at this event will be presented to the WHCoA
Policy Committee and become part of GSA's five-year civic engagement
project.
For additional information about these forums, we urge you to check
for updates on the Academy's web site at: http://www.agingsociety.org.
If you have any questions about the forums or would like to RSVP,
you may contact Christina Leone, Program Coordinator by email at
cleone@agingsociety.org or by telephone at 202-842-1275 x 128.
Civic Engagement Paper Awards
GSA's Civic Engagement in an Older America initiative will offer
two cash awards to recognize outstanding papers on the topic of
civic engagement as it relates to older adults. The Initiative will
award $500 to one paper from a student or junior scholar. Eligibility
for being considered a "junior scholar" is that the individual
should be no more than five years post-doctorate on September 10,
2005. The Initiative will also award $1000 to one paper from a senior
scholar.
Criteria for selection are that the paper focuses on an aspect
of civic engagement and explores questions related to federal, state
or local policy initiatives that maximize involvement of older adults
in meaningful, productive civic roles, including work, caregiving,
and volunteering. Papers must be methodologically sound and of publishable
quality. Persons who wish their abstracts to be considered for this
award should check the appropriate box in the Call for Papers for
the 2005 GSA Annual Scientific Meeting coming in early February.
Finalists will be selected from among the abstracts accepted for
presentation at the meeting and are requested to submit an article-length
manuscript for final judging by September 10, 2005. The author(s)
must present the work during the 2005 GSA Annual Meeting, which
will be held in New Orleans, LA. For further information, please
