Prime Time for Civic Engagement

During the week of October 19-25, more than 90 network TV shows participated in the Entertainment Industry Foundation's "I Participate" campaign by featuring storylines and characters expressing the power and personal benefits of service and volunteering. Shows with volunteering themes in their scripts included Grey's Anatomy, All My Children, Desperate Housewives, CSI, and The Office (click here to see how your favorite shows contributed). Backed by partners including AARP and Major League Baseball, the campaign hopes to encourage viewers to seek out volunteer opportunities through its www.iparticipate.org website and AARP's www.createthegood.com website.

Sharing in the USA (TODAY)

USA TODAY's in-depth report on charity and philanthropy in the United States highlights the new look of America's charitable donors, as well as the impact of the economic downturn on individual giving and non-profit fundraising. The special section, titled "Sharing in the USA" also examines the way that social networking and the Internet are changing the face of giving and volunteering in the United States and across the globe. The State of Volunteering

Through its partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics, The Corporation for National and Community Service has released the most comprehensive collection of information on volunteering and civic engagement ever assembled, with detailed data for all states and nearly 200 cities. The redesigned interactive Volunteering In America website is a rich source of information that allows nonprofit leaders and policy makers to view data and assemble customized reports that answer questions such as: which states have experienced the largest growth in volunteering since 2007?; which cities do well at retaining volunteers?; do volunteers donate more to charities than non-volunteers?; are Baby Boomers the most likely group to volunteer in your state?; and how has the economy impacted volunteer recruitment?

America's Civic Health in Hard Times

The National Conference on Citizenship's annual America's Civic Health Index 2009 reveals that Americans have made hard choices during the economic downturn, with 72 percent of respondents saying they have cut back on time spent volunteering and participating in civic activities. The survey also found, however, that social connections, particularly "God, friends, and Facebook," provide a "civic safety net" that forestalls "civic foreclosure." Visualizing Volunteering

This interactive graphic, based on data from the American Time Use Survey, allows users to see how much time different groups of Americans spend sleeping, eating, working, watching television, and volunteering in an average day. Although people over age 65 spend slightly more time volunteering (14 minutes) on an average day than younger adults ages 25 to 64 (9 minutes), they spend much more time watching television (4 hours) than do younger adults (2.5 hours).

The Wisdom of Age

MENTOR, the nation's leading advocate and expert resource for adult-youth mentoring initiatives, has released The Wisdom of Age: A Staff Guide - a handbook to help mentoring organizations recruit and work most effectively with the growing number of older Americans who could be volunteer mentors. The guide for staff has a companion handbook for mentors that includes a collection of tools and resources for older adults engaged in intergenerational mentoring relationships. Both publications are available here.
